 Healthy hot chocolate

This hot chocolate amounts to just under 700 calories per mug.

50g cashew nuts (290 kcal)

3-4 Medjool dates – de-stoned (180 kcal)

Raw chocolate nibs or discs – 25g (145 kcal)

200mls of almond milk (80 kcal)

Soak the cashew nuts and dates in 100mls of the almond milk for a few hours or overnight.   Cashews are quite a soft nut and blend to a very smooth milk leaving out the need for a nutmilk bag.

Melt the chocolate pieces in the remaining almond milk.    Place all ingredients into a mixer and blend until smooth.

Cashew nuts are an excellent source of protein with 20g per 100g.   In addition to this, half of the weight consists of fat, which accounts for the decent calorie intake of this drink.

Per 100g, dates contain 270 calories consisting of around 75% sugar.  Dates (Phoenix dactylifera) are also a good source of iron and potassium.   Date is one of the oldest known fruit crops, which is thought to originate from Mesopotamia.  Date palms are prone to attack by various insects and fungi, so seek organically grown dates whenever available.
